COLUMBUS, Ga. - Faulkner took on No. 14 Brenau in elimination game action in the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament here at the South Commons Softball Complex Friday morning. The Lady Eagles rallied into the lead in their final at-bat, but the Golden Tigers capitalized on a pair of crucial Faulkner errors in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the 3-2 victory.
Brenau struck first with a solo bomb courtesy of Ellen Black in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Faulkner answered in the top of the fifth when Haley Munroe singled to left-center scoring Avery Mott from second. The Lady Eagles loaded the bases just minutes later, but were unable to generate more runs.
Munroe ignited the scoreboard again in the top of the seventh with an RBI single to the pitcher's mound giving Faulkner the lead with three outs to play. Then, things took a turn for the worse.
The game suddenly mirrored yesterday's opening round battle with Brewton-Parker in all the wrong ways.
Kristina Reynolds cranked a hopper to third, but a misplayed grounder by Avery Mott put a runner on for Brenau.
A subsequent error by pitcher Mattie Dotson fielding a ball just outside the circle left a pair of runners on base, no outs on the board and an anxious defense searching for answers.
Munroe proved invaluable in the field as well and her focused fielding at shortstop produced back-to-back outs as the Golden Tigers crept into a 2-2 tie.
Just as Faulkner was hoping for extra innings Tiffany Schandera hammered the dagger just out of Mott's reach at third, scoring a run and securing the win.
Faulkner lead in the bottom of the seventh in both of its losses in the SSAC tournament. The Lady Eagles committed four errors, all of them in seventh inning play which ultimately cost them both events.
Dotson (3-14) was dealt the loss despite allowing just one earned run on five hits against one of the most potent offenses in the nation. The freshman had two strikeouts.
Munroe had a stellar showing in the final performance of here career. The senior was 3-for-3 at the plate and logged both of Faulkner's RBIs.
Mott finished the game 1-for-2 and scored a run.
The Lady Eagles close the season at 14-23.
