MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner's women's golf team has crossed yet another program milestone with its first-ever at-large berth in the NAIA National Championship the home office announced this afternoon. The 17th-ranked Lady Eagles will compete in the 30-team field at the PGA National hosted by top-ranked Keiser University in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., May 23-26.
Faulkner claimed at-large qualification No. 9 of 12 just four spots behind Southern States Athletic Conference opponent and No. 12 William Carey.
Fifth-ranked Dalton State earned an automatic bid to the 23rd annual event as the SSAC tournament champion.
An appearance on the national stage is the crowning achievement on a season riddled with program firsts.
The Lady Eagles received their first-ever national ranking in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Poll in August and maintained a Top 25 position throughout the season while climbing as high as No. 13.
Faulkner had six Top 5 finishes, which included three victories, in eight regular-season outings which is the most by a women's team.
The Lady Eagles's third place finish in the league tournament is also a program best.
Freshman Anna Reid is the only Lady Eagle to claim back-to-back SSAC Golfer of the Week titles in eligible selections and is the only woman's ever to earn the same award at the national level.
"I'm so proud of this team," said interim head coach and former Faulkner player Brooke Fuller. "These girls have worked very hard and I don't know of a more deserving team to have this opportunity. God is good and we are so excited and hope to make this first appearance at nationals a memorable one."
Pairings for the opening round of play in the championship will be released on Friday.
